Břeclav lies on the Dyje River, about 50 km south-east of Brno. It is by the Austrian border and close to Slovakia. In 2025, it had around 24,500 residents.

Břeclav Castle stands on the site of Prince Břetislav I's castle; the Žerotín family rebuilt it in Renaissance style in the 16th century.
