Kyjov lies in the valley of the Kyjovka River in the Hodonín District. It is about 43 km from Brno. In 2025, it had a population of 10,645.

The first written mention of Kyjov dates to 1126, when it was given to the Benedictines as a market village. The Renaissance town hall, built in 1561–1562, was declared a national cultural monument in 2023. The historic centre is an urban conservation area. The local history museum is housed in a Renaissance manor house in the town centre.
